Darjeeling, INDIA
Darjeeling tea is regarded as one of "The World's Three Great Teas". Darjeeling is situated at the foot of the Himalayas, in the North of India. Many of its tea plantations are located at the height of over 1,000 meters above sea level. It has a climate, with a wide hot and cold temperature range, lots of fog, and a wide range of geographical features and soil making it perfect for producing high-quality fine teas.
Assam, INDIA
Tea from the Assam region, a plain which spreads into the easternmost region of India, has strong larger leaves which produce a darker water colour and a full-bodied flavour bringing to mind rich earth. It is perfect for milk tea. It is quite understandable why the local people use this tea to enjoy Chai an, Indian-style milk tea.
Nilgiri, INDIA
South India's Nilgiri means "blue mountain" in local dialect. Plantation production started in the mid. 19th century and it is the second largest tea producing area adter Assam. Especially teas produced in altitude regions over 1,600m surrounded by plants like eucalyptus or cypress trees, are known internationally as "fragrant teas" and highly recognized by their special flavors.
Others, INDIA
Sikkim is located north of Darjeeling and near the Tibetan border. Kangura is in northwest India and Dooars and Terai are in between Assam and Darjeeling. These are some of India's famous tea-producing areas which cultivate high quality specialized teas. Their characteristic flavors are internationally recoqnized and highly appreciated.

NEPAL
Nepal's tea producing history is relatively new. Though some records indicate tea plantations began in 1860s, full-scale production only got going after the 1970s. In addition to traditional-style production in Ilam Valley, next to Darjeeling, lowland areas produce CTC teas using the latest equipment.
CEYLON (SRI LANKA)
The official name of the beautiful tea island referred to as "The Pearl of the Indian Ocean", is Sri Lanka. It was a large coffee-producing island until the mid-19th century. But after major coffee disease damage it converted to tea-production. Production is divided into Low-grown (below 610m), Medium-grown (610-1,220m) and High-grown (over 1,220m).
Dimbula, CEYLON West side of island's central mountains is the main tea-producing area for Medium-High-grown. Main quality season of this area is between February to March. Tea has a rose or orange water color, sweet fragrance and clean aftertaste.
Nuwara Eliya, CEYLON High-grown producing area with a near 2,000m altitude. The teas has refreshing clean taste and the quality tea produced between January and March (some produced in Aug.) has a fresh lingering taste like wild mint, which is reffered to as salicyclic acid aroma.
Uva, CEYLON One of "The World's 3 Great Teas", having a rich full-bodied taste and invigorating aroma. Being situated on the east side of the central mountains, its quality season is from July to August.
Kandy, CEYLON The area surrounding Kanday, an ancient city of World Heritage, is Ceylon's oldest tea producing area and major area of Medium-grown. Suited for tea with milk.
Ruhuna, CEYLON General term for the southern Medium-to-Low-grown producing areas. A gentle taste goes well with milk and sugar.
Other Areas, CEYLON In Ceylon, known as black-tea island, the number of plantations and regions are so numerous that even specialist cannot grasp the corect figures. Among the many are Uda Pussellawa (High-grown) and Ratnapura (south of Dimbula).
CHINA
The roots of tea drinking culture trace back to China. Through a more than 5000-year-long history starting from Entei Shinno, a legendary founder of agriculture and Chinese medicine, China has produced green, black, oolong and flower flavored teas (the origin of flavored tea).
Anhui, CHINA Province in lower course of Chanjian River, around the Huangshan Mountain is known as one of the best tea-producing areas in China. Also noteable for its Keemun tea since the 19th century.
Fujian/Guangding, CHINA Fujian Province, especially around northern Wuyi mountain is responsible for present day black tea in China and produces smoked black tea called "Lapsang Souchong". In Guangdong Province Yingde black tea has been produced since 1960s.
Yunnan, CHINA Yunnan Province, southern mountain area of China is considered along with India' Assam area to be the home of tea trees. There is a unique tea-drinking cultures. Produces high-quality puer, black, and green teas.
AFRICA
There are also many well-known teas from Africa. The tea produced in regions such as Mauritus Island, Kenya, Madagascar and South Africa, all have charming characteristics representative of cheerful anf youthful energy at reasonable prices. Kenya is the 3rd biggest tea-producing country in the world after India and Ceylon. African tea regions mainly produce modern CTC black tea as they were developed only after the 20th century.
OTHERS
There are still many lesser-known tea-producing areas. Indonesia was one of the world's leading tea-producers before WW II. Argentina has many modern large-scale tea plantations. Vietnam has long produced high-quality black teas as well green and oolong teas. Turkey with its own tea-drinking culture, also produces black tea. And we cannot forget Japan which started black tea production since 1875 in such areas as Kyushu, Shizuoka and Sanin etc.
